Maybe the most convenient night camp on the Golan Trail is located next to the gate of what used to be kibutz Ein Zivan. The site was developed as memorial for the dead of the 134 rangers battalion. My father served in that battalion and there is a quite unbelievable story about the way this battalion ended its life. To be honest, some parts of this saga are hypothesized on the basis of clues, whose validity couldn’t be verified by me.
In the sixth day of the Yom Kipur war (11.10.1973), the battalion was leading the 210 division in their counterattack into Syria. The night before, they camped not faraway from there, and in the late morning crossed the border, passed Kuneitra and advanced in the direction of Damascus. The Syrian, however, expected that move and deployed a well prepared ambush around the village of Khan-Arnabe. Nevertheless the intelligence of the Israeli army managed to get a clear-crystal information about the ambush and sent it in time to the intelligence unit of the division. However, in the intelligence unit, there were two secret agents of the secret service, who volunteered to help during the war. Instead of warning the battalion of what is expecting them, the agents actually used the information in order to direct the battalion straight into the ambush. The commander of the battalion was not fooled by the silence.
Twice along their way he stopped the battalion, called the intelligence unit and asked if they sure the road is clear. At the second time, just before they approached Khan-Arnabe he said he had a very bad feeling of danger. In both cases he was ensured by the agents that it was all clear. The ambush proved to be catastrophic. Tens of soldiers were killed immediately and the division needed to send its tanks’ battalions to deal with the Syrian position. Moreover, because of the delay, the division lost its race to the strategic hills of Katane, which defended Damascus. When the division eventually reached Katane, A Syrian brigade was already waiting for them in superior positions, and blocked the Israeli advance. No Arab intelligence ever made such a damage as these secrete agents. I suspect that one of them, the brain between the two, was an agent called I.’, and if indeed he was there, the sabotage was not a mistake but a deliberate act of murder.
About half a year before the war, the 9 years old son of that agent was bulling a girl of his class. The agent saved his son’s neck by slandering another boy, whose father happened to serve in that battalion. A second eye witness and her family were severely intimidated. When the father of the slandered boy learned that his son is bitten daily by a gang, he made a bomb, but confused by the intrigue, planted it in the car of another agent, who was used as a cover story for the first one. The ranger informed about the planted bomb and the deputy of the secret service, who knew them all, put an end to the scandal before any one got hurt. Even before that, the agent pulled his son out of school, so he will not be recognized, and a short time afterwards took his family back with him abroad. When he learned that a war is approaching, a couple of days before it actually started, he came back to Israel and volunteered to serve in that intelligence unit of that battalion where he tried to get rid of the slandered boy’s father by sending his battalion into that ambush.
It is difficult to believe to this story because no reasonable person would bother so much because of a poor girl. However the agent was not a normal person. He was a paranoid psychopath to whom family members needed to report any friend they brought home, a real sick men who completely absorbed into his realm of suspicions and imagination. The girl was indeed the daughter of a free mason and a devoted communist. King Khasan was so fond of him at that time, that he kept him in his own personal basement at Morocco. Kings have special affections for devoted communists and free masons alike. However, in the 70’s, an Israeli child who happened to bully a communist’s daughter would be given a medal and not the other way. Nevertheless, it is plausible that this devoted communist was related to a certain clan whose other members (some of them any way) have worked in the last generations for the C.I.A. (with the permission and cover of the state of Israel). However, 40 years ago, the cover identity of the missing father of that family, was known to only very few in the very top of the Israeli governance. So how did this I.’ knew about him? And how did he new about the up-coming surprise attack? Well, I think he was a double agent, a real rat within the Israeli system.
We, however, will never know the truth about all that. probably. The Israeli secret service silenced the scandal, dismissed the battalion never to be called again for duty, appointed its commander a deputy brigadier in order to keep him busy, and made sure that the events will never be interrogated. The other agent, who had been there as a cover story, died some years later from an aggressive illness and the deputy of the secret service followed him soon after. I myself learned about this story ten years after the events, when I served at the school of intelligence of the army. A week later, when I remained at base for Saturday, I was invited by a young agents of the military security service to participate in a sex and drugs party at base. The agents were innocents and sincere, and I’m still not sure that it was a trap. But the easy going behavior of their main Joker raised my suspicion and, any way, drugs in the school of intelligence seamed to me as blasphemy, so I refused. A couple of years ago I appealed to the high court, asking, among other things, for full information about the circumstances and possible involvement of this agent in my father death, the day before that battle. I was rejected on the verge, and the court, in its eternal wisdom, directed me to the authorities in concern.
Secret services in general have an excellent public relations, but the reality is much different and the Israeli services are of no exception. In most cases, not only that they don’t do their job, but they are actually self deceiving. No James Bond in this business, gentlemen. No James Bond and no Smiley. Never been one, I’m afraid. Humans, in a matter of fact, do not deserve much better. humans’ society is easy to be manipulated, and without its cooperation, no malice could inflict its harm. I feel that It is part of a more fundamental moral paradox, inherited in the existence of society. Some fundamental paradoxes of existence and nature can not rationally be solved.
See how much we can learn out of an anonymous list of names curved on a simple stone in an insignificant night camp somewhere along a remote and relatively unfamiliar Trail in the Golan. If you pass there one day, you may find it a convenient place for either a day or night camp. There are places for fire, tables, water are just across the road at the ex-kibutz, and the wind is low at evenings. The memory stone has a niche between the trees and two stone benches. I knew some of those who remained afterwards, and they were good and decent people who, as soldiers, considered the Arabs as future partners and not enemies. They were all raised by the humanist education system of the socialist party in the early days before and after the independence of the state. It is pity, but they really died in vain: After all his trouble, this I.’ agent didn’t manage to kill the man he was looking for. That man was already dead the night before, but was not yet identified, so the agent didn’t know that.
